I was skeptical off the armless design, but they stay on perfectly– not too tight without any bounce. Also, it’s nice to know you’ll never lose them.

This snuck in here last minute, we just had one run in these shorts and gotta say– they’re unbelievably lightweight and breathable, and super comfortable throughout the waist and liner. Made in Italy of four-way stretch fabric, with a 5” inseam.

Seriously, it’s time to move on from your garbage Wal-Mart chair. The gold standard in ultra lightweight backpacking and camp chairs, Helinox expanded its offerings to include the Chair Two, featuring a high-back design for more comfort and versatility. Packs down into a small package, easily transportable for those post-run hangs or kids’ baseball games.

One of our favorite overall shorts, the Roark Baja has a cellphone stash pocket with a water-resistant lining, which nobody else is doing for some reason. The scalloped sides are a nice design touch and they both look and feel great on the run. TAYLOR: We don’t often think of it as so, but running can be a dangerous sport. Some of us can’t even make it down the street without blowing out a body part, while others launch themselves deep into the woods without a care in the world. I’m one of the latter. Whether you’re staying in the neighborhood or tagging a peak, there’s a (hopefully) conscious understanding that something may go awry. It’s an optimistic gamble every time.
As a husband and a dad who has had a couple of backcountry mishaps, I’ve become a little more sensitive to the inherent dangers of running. For example, my most recent incident was a broken foot on the trails. Everything was going fine. The sun was setting. The air was cooling. Then, snap! Now the rugged and beautiful landscape became a concern rather than a comfort.
I had run nine miles at this point, and there was at least 5k to the closest trailhead that was still going to be void of people by this time. That’s not even where my car was parked. Even worse, it was at least another mile up a steep gravel road beyond the trailhead where I would maybe get service. All I could do was attempt to hike myself out of there.
NO SUBSCRIPTION NEEDED
TAYLOR: Where was my Garmin Inreach, you ask? It was cozy in its box at home because I hadn’t forked over the cash for a subscription yet. It’s no real excuse, but that’s the most common barrier to most outdoorsfolk from using a safety service. How much does that help? None.
This is one of the great selling points of Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio. There is no subscription needed for its full range of use. At a fraction of the cost of other license-required safety mechanisms, it becomes a top-of-the-list option because it is likely the one I would use on a regular basis. In my previously mentioned scenario, Rocky Talkies would have been a perfect tool to have when I split from a group of runners I was with.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN TOUGH
TAYLOR: My Rocky Talkie Mountain Radios have been put through the wringer at my household. So far, they’ve survived camping trips, numerous runs and hikes, as well as a couple of children chucking them around. These things are ready for any adventure you want to go on.
They’re built to take a beating and keep on ticking with a thermoplastic covering to keep the radio safe from big bumps and drops. Each Rocky Talkie has a screen that shows the channel number and battery life, too. The screen is what I was initially worried about, but it turns out that it’s actually shatterproof. Though it’s not submersible, the Mountain Radio has an IP56 rating, which means it’s splashproof, snowproof, and compatible with a waterproof hand mic to keep it out of harm’s way if desired.
A huge temperature range of -20 to 120 degrees ensures use in any conditions.
The radio is built to function at a wide range of temperatures, too, from -20 degrees Fahrenheit up to 120 degrees. Since the Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio is so lightweight (6.1 oz by itself, 7.9 oz with a leash), it was easy to store up front on my running vest or hiking pack. It’s actually the same weight as my modern smartphone with an Otterbox case. It felt no different from having my phone in my front pack pocket. The Mountain Radio slid into my running waist belt without an issue too.
Added security from a heavy-duty carabiner and leash helped me run with no worries of losing the Rocky Talkie as I tackled steep trails. I’ve been there and done that with keys and a phone, but these measures shouldn’t be overlooked.
CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?
TAYLOR: Rocky Talkie is basically the Steph Curry of walkie-talkies. The Mountain Radios have a huge range for their class. These are 2-watt radios, which basically means they have higher power to bridge any obstructions between the radios. Rocky Talkie is also preparing to launch more expensive 5-watt radios, which should pack even more power. Either way, these aren’t the run-of-the-mill radios that you used on college road trips.
Even so, the range depends entirely on your terrain. Out on the plains with a clear line of sight, the Mountain Radio can reach up to 35 miles away. I haven’t been able to test that, but based on my other tests, I’m inclined to trust it.
My tests were in more mountainous and forested settings. Most of my excursions were going out from my home to the nearest trailheads and communicating back and forth with my family.
Here’s what I found as a result of my basic testing. When my family was indoors, I could consistently get around two miles away with clear communication. I could also push it to about two and a half miles before talking was crackly or diminished. If my family went outside, however, I could extend the range to about three or four miles depending on the direction and obstructions.
This falls right into the one to five miles of range that Rocky Talkie boasts for mountainous settings. If I were to use the Mountain Radio on a daily basis, this would be my usual scenario, and it would make perfect sense as most of my local trailheads fall into unreliable cell service territory.
I also used the Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio while directing a trail race. One volunteer had a radio about 1.25 miles away, across mountainous and thickly forested terrain, but my communication with them was consistent and clear even as they moved around from location to location. Because these types of radio waves travel in a line (and do not bend), it’s tougher to use the Rocky Talkie in a city with built-up infrastructure. I expect that dependable communication would fall to less than a mile due to the buildings, though the trade-off is that you’d get better cell service results.
BUTTONS, BUTTONS, BUTTONS
TAYLOR: As for controls, the Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio is everything you dreamed about as a young buck — totally tactile and easy to use.
A few simple buttons make communication easy. Large buttons like a top power button and a side call button are easy to see and use, even with thick gloves on. Surfing the 128 potential channels is straightforward, with a pair of channel buttons on the side. A lock switch on top holds your channel and volume controls.
Inside the tough shell, battery life is another no-compromise aspect of the Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio. It utilizes a 1550mAh Li-ion battery that’s rechargeable via USB-C. It can also be replaced while on the go, but a four-day battery life is definitely not out of the question. After a camping trip, I forgot to turn off the radios, but three days later, I woke up to some climbers chatting back and forth about the pitch they were on. Even though the radios were inactive for a few days, their battery lasted and had juice to spare.
With controls and battery life being no-brainers, it’s easy to have confidence in the usability of the Rocky Talkie Mountain radio.
FOR BEST RESULTS…
TAYLOR: Reviewing the Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio made me rethink my use of communication devices a little bit. For me, in a mountainous setting, I almost always bring my phone with me for runs. Most of the time, it’s a good enough safety measure. There are times, on a weekly basis, that I am fairly close to home yet can’t get service. Just like with car crashes, close to home is where I’ve had my worst running incidents. From that standpoint alone, I can see Rocky Talkies as a practical safeguard.
Fastpacking, big trail adventures, and FKT’ing with a crew would be other scenarios where I believe the Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio could be used — especially if there’s a group dynamic involved. Quick communication between groups on whereabouts and conditions can be invaluable for such situations. Again, it’s an easy safeguard to have a line of communication.
Any of these activities done solo in remote locations would warrant the use of some satellite-based subscription device, though.
There are a ton of other uses for the Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio. Many trail runners also take on other outdoor forays like skiing, rock climbing, hiking, camping, and who knows what else. I think these activities have a more upfront practical value for the Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio. Have you ever done a Ragnar Relay? Sure, you could arrive at the start line in that pair of daily trainers that already have 350 miles on them. Or you could look good and feel great in a fresh pair of carbon-plated race day shoes, something that’s both a reward for hard work and a way to harness it all for its full potential. Are you gonna finish either way? Of course. But may as well give it your best shot.
That said, all race day shoes are not created equal. Some are meant for shorter distances, some say they’re meant for the marathon but are really meant for a half marathon (sorry, we love you On Cloudboom Echo 3, but we’re not Helen Obiri), while others just shouldn’t be on the feet of those giving it their best (not naming names, but IYKYK).

The rest that make the cut are all pretty great, but there are some key differences that may affect what you want to put underfoot on race day. That’s why we’ll tell you why we love each shoe, but we’ll also tell you its best use-case and which running preference it’ll suit best.
The ever-elusive Adidas Adizero Adios Evo Pro 1
This is our list for now, but check back often; we’ll be shuffling things around and updating it as more shoes become available (e.g., the Adidas Adios Pro 3 did not make this list because we’re ready for the next version, which is hopefully coming soon). We also didn’t include the lightest and most premium race shoe ever made (the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1) because it’s virtually impossible to get at the moment.

The past versions of the Metaspeed Sky/Edge were quick and snappy but left a little bit to be desired in the comfort department. Asics listened and delivered with the Metaspeed Sky and Edge Paris, both named after the upcoming Olympics location.The Edge Paris, in particular, gets an extra 3.5 mm of foam in the midfoot, providing a softer landing than even the Sky Paris.
Both shoes feature FlyteFoam Turbo+, a Peba-style midsole material that is both super lightweight and ultra bouncy. While we think Asics should streamline the Metaspeed models into one shoe to eliminate any confusion, there is a difference between the two. While the Sky Paris features a flatter carbon-fiber plate and is aimed toward stride-based runners, we’ve found that it’s actually a bit more of a responsive shoe compared to the softer Edge Paris, which has that extra forefoot foam sitting above a levered, scoop-style plate. It’s gonna come down to personal preference, but whatever you choose, you can know that you’re getting an incredibly lightweight race day shoe that feels fantastic underfoot.

We’re as surprised as you are that this shoe is on the list. In the past, Diadora has released some decent trainers that double as lifestyle shoes, but they could never seem to nail down the pure running shoe. That’s all changed in 2024, as Diadora has definitely upped their game to the same level as the heavy hitters. Nothing says that more than the Gara Carbon, a carbon-plated shoe with a Pebax midsole that excels on race day.
It’s bouncy, it’s light, and it’s fast. The Matryx upper may feature the most durable construction of any race day shoe. It also looks really good. The only downside? It’s $300. But if you’re looking for style in spades or something that will stand out on race day while still giving you premium performance, then the Gara Carbon may be your bello baby.

We weren’t sure what to think of this shoe when we first put it on our feet. We’re still not even sure. Is it a trainer, or is it a racing shoe? Or is it neither? We think it can be all things, depending on what you’re looking for. What we do know is that this is the most fun shoe that money can buy right now.
The accentuated rocker geometry paired with an ultra-high stack of Peba foam around a winged carbon fiber plate (whew, that’s a lot) gives this shoe a trampoline effect if there ever was one. It feels like you’re bounding along with little effort. The upper is also form-fitting and perfectly suited for the ride (even if we didn’t love the laces). Honestly, it feels like a unique shoe that puts Hoka back in the driver’s seat when it comes to cool running shoes. While we wouldn’t race super fast in this shoe, it could be a great choice for first-time marathoners.

If you’re a fan of all those things and are looking for something that has a bounce and snap on toe-off, then you may want to consider this one. Added bonus: with one of the wider platforms on a race day shoe, it’s surprisingly stable underfoot.

A rulebreaker if there ever was one, the Wave Rebellion Pro 2 actually has a midsole stack of more than 50 mm, and yet— it’s still street legal. That’s because of the angled geometry of the heel, making it only 39 mm where World Athletics (the governing body for pro marathoning) measures it. Of course, most of us reading this can wear anything we want and not get DQ-ed from a race. But if you wanna feel like a bad boy, then this is the way to go.
Obviously, the Enerzy Lite+ midsole provides a ton of cushion underfoot, but the aggressive plate structure within the midsole also provides a quick turnover and snappy feel. The outsole grip is also pretty solid for a race-day shoe, which is a sign of good things to come for Mizuno.

Quite possibly the prettiest race day shoe out there, the SC Elite v4 brings the best of what New Balance has to offer altogether in a single package. Featuring a 100% Peba-based FuelCell midsole and a thinner, rippled carbon fiber plate, this shoe gives back some of the energy that the previous version sucked up with its softness.
With a wide platform, it’s one of the more stable race day options, and the Fantomfit upper is light and breathable and keeps the foot locked in place. The only downside to that security – it is one of the heavier race day options out there, but it may be worth it for the safety features alone.

After a sophomore slump, the Alphafly returns to the glory of the original. The Atomknit 3.0 wraps the foot snugly while providing superior ventilation. It’s the lightest Alphafly ever and it feels like it. Because when it’s on, it’s a rocket headed for the moon, thanks to all the parts coming together.
Those parts include the continuous ZoomX midsole, which allows for a smoother transition than the decoupled heel and forefoot segments of the first two models. The combination of the carbon fiber plate and the dual Air Zoom units form a pop hit that even Taylor Swift would be envious of. It’s a can’t-miss shoe on race day, and with the new Volt colorway, it’ll be hard not to.

The one that started it all is still the one that can do it all. If you like a race day shoe that’s a straight shooter with all of the punch and none of the distractions, then the Vaporfly is what you want. I just wore it again last night for a workout, and it’s still my go-to for going fast. The Flyknit upper is just about perfect—it’s breathable, it looks fantastic, and the offset lacing locks down the foot as well as you could want.
The ZoomX midsole and carbon fiber Flyplate are a match made in heaven, giving that perfect balance of cushion and responsiveness. I’ve also somehow taken this shoe out in the rain, from a 20-mile long run to a half marathon, and the grip and performance are both excellent. Turns out, it’s both a fair and foul-weather friend.

There’s something about the S/Lab Spectur that we just love. Maybe it’s the luxurious upper fit. Maybe it’s the midsole sensation, which is both cushioned and responsive thanks to the dual layers of foam in the midsole (Peba Energy Foam+ on top, EVA Energy Foam on bottom) wrapped around a winged, carbon-infused plate.
Salomon designed this shoe for slower-paced marathoners (3:30 and slower) in an effort to provide more cushion and stability without sacrificing performance. We think they nailed it. This is the perfect shoe for going longer, both in time and distance, and we can’t think of a better shoe for a first-time marathoner looking to jump in the super shoe game. Plus, it’s the least expensive race day shoe out there, so you won’t totally drain the bank account (maybe just a little).

When it comes to going faster, Saucony’s no dummy. They’re also not beholden to the latest fads and trends and chasing the next competitor. They basically know what they’re doing and apply it to race day shoes, which has been evident from version 1 of the Saucony Endorphin Pro. The fourth version of the shoe carries on that tradition, with a combo bed of PWRRUN PB and PWRRUN HG surrounding a winged carbon fiber plate. It’s not as firm as versions one and two, but seems to blend those versions with the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 (also great).
If you’re looking for something even more aggressive, then you should also check out the Saucony Endorphin Elite, which didn’t quite land with us, but is a cult favorite of other running shoe fans.

MEAGHAN: To say I didn’t love the Asics Magic Speed 1 or 2 would be putting it nicely. I even opted out of reviewing v2 because I didn’t want to put 20 miles on it. So now that I’ve sufficiently bashed the Magic Speed (if you want more bashing read Thomas’ comments below), let’s talk about the latest iteration– v3. While it doesn’t look like a huge departure from v2, it truly is.
The most apparent (and favorable) update might be the full-length carbon fiber plate sandwiched between two layers of Flytefoam (FF) Blast+. The previous iteration featured a TPU plate and a bottom layer of FF Blast, a firmer version of the foam. Asics also added a couple millimeters to the midsole on this go-around, giving the shoe a 36mm/29mm stack but keeping the 7mm drop.
The upper is now designed with Motion Wrap material, the same stuff you’ll find in the Metaspeed Sky+ and Edge+. All of these changes also brought down the overall weight, my women’s size 8 came in at 6.5oz.
So how do all these updates feel out on the road? Let’s get into it.
THOMAS: In early 2021, I got a text alert informing me that a plated racer was coming from Asics. This was big news. Unfortunately, the only plated race day shoe Asics had put out was the Metaracer, which fell short of being an actual “super shoe.”
We had seen prototypes of a higher stack Asics race day shoe during the rainy, Covid-amended London Marathon in 2020. In that race, Sarah Hall put together one of the most spectacular finishes in U.S. women’s marathon history, running alone for the whole race before closing in over the last 100 meters to secure second place. The shoe she was wearing looked to be a legit contender.
I had high hopes my incoming shoe would be a version of the one Sara wore in London. Unfortunately, the shoe was the Magic Speed. There wasn’t any nylon-based foam (i.e. Pebax), or a full-length carbon plate. The Magic Speed was a FlyteFoam Blast midsole with a forefoot TPU plate. Sounds nice on paper, but really there was no magic to the method. I was disappointed and a little confused. Asics reassured me that the “real” race day shoe was coming, the MetaSpeed Sky.
The second version of the Magic Speed, with a design that very much resembled the Metaspeed, arrived about a year ago. Again, I got my hopes up. Again, I was let down. It was one of the few shoes we gave a red rating in 2022. Needless to say, I wasn’t super excited when the Magic Speed v3 arrived at the office.
Nevertheless, I reluctantly gave it a shot. Turns out, the third time is the charm. This time the magic was there.

THE GOOD
MEAGHAN: As you may imagine from the introduction, my expectations for this shoe were not very high. I felt the previous versions were just too firm, so I was pretty happy that the step-in feel provided a softer, bouncier feel. It doesn’t hurt that the shoes look amazing. The white colorway with red accents gives you those classic Asics vibes.
The upper is very reminiscent of the Metaspeed Sky+. which I love. It’s really light and breathable, but still provides the structure you want for fast running. There isn’t a ton of padding around the collar and heel (more on that below), but the shoes feel comfortable overall.
While I typically love a ton of stack, I didn’t feel like this shoe lacked anything in the midsole. The FF Blast+ is soft, but paired with the carbon fiber plate, gives you a nice pop. I didn’t do any real workouts in this shoe, but the post run strides felt great. I also found myself naturally picking up the pace on easy runs.
THOMAS: This shoe looked so good I had to try it on. It fits like an uptempo shoe should. The Magic Speed 3 hugs the arch and just looks like a tiny Porsche for your foot. I was immediately intrigued with the full FlyteFoam Blast+ midsole, and was happy to find the harsh underfoot feeling from the previous models was gone.
The cushion dialed in for fast miles that won’t tear up your legs. Even though the trainer feels low to the ground compared to most shoes today, there is still enough cushion. I was nervous it wouldn’t be enough stack for Meaghan (she loves cushioning above all other traits), so when she liked the ride I was certain the shoe would have wide appeal. The full carbon plate feels snappy. Overall, I have no complaints about the ride of the Magic Speed 3.
The one-piece upper is a screen door. You can feel the breeze flow over your toes. I can’t believe Meaghan didn’t mention the gusseted tongue. It has one. The insole is glued down, so it will be a tight fit if you need custom insoles. Once I had the right size, the Magic Speed 3 fit like a glove.
There is plenty of rubber on the outsole and I did not experience any issues with traction. My size 10.5 weighs 8.1 oz./232 g.

THE BAD
MEAGHAN: I don’t really want to blame the shoe for this because my feet are really jacked up, but I did have some rubbing on my heel that caused a blister/bleeding. After the first run, I made sure to wear higher socks and that fixed the issue, but something to note.
I also had to size up in this shoe. I typically wear a women’s 7.5, but as with all Asics race-style shoes, I went with a half-size large (women’s 8).
THOMAS: Meg mentioned it and I will as well. The sizing in Asics shoes varies from daily trainers to race day shoes. I normally wear a size 10.5, but in all of Asics daily trainers including the Superblast, I wear a US size 10. In the Metaspeed Sky+ and Edge+ and the Magic Speed I wear a 10.5. You will need to factor that in when trying the shoes.

MEAGHAN: I always felt that Asics was missing a solid option for fast training days, and the Magic Speed 3 fits the bill. It’s the perfect companion to the Metaspeed Sky+, and honestly– a possible replacement for it. You can’t beat the $160 price point. I would easily lace this up for the half marathon distance and below. And certainly use it for workouts and faster training days.
THOMAS: This shoe can handle a lot of different runs. While getting miles on the shoe, I used it for easy runs and uptempo runs and liked how the shoe felt for both. The most frequent question we got about the Magic Speed 3 was how does it compare to the Saucony Endorphin Speed. The Magic Speed gives a softer feel and the carbon plate is more noticeable. When you get going in the Magic Speed 3 you can feel the plate flex.
I would recommend the Magic Speed 3 to the runner that likes a closer to the ground feel and a crispy ride. If you’re a diehard Saucony Kinvara fan, maybe give the Magic Speed 3 a shot.
